My Journey Through Bacterial Meningitis and Beyond
In January 2023, my life took an unexpected turn when I was diagnosed with bacterial meningitis. The illness hit me hard, and I spent a month in the High Dependence Unit and Intensive Care Unit, relying on a ventilator to breathe. At first, I couldn’t walk or even feed myself. It was a challenging time, but it also marked the beginning of a transformative journey.
Recovery was slow and took six long months. During this period, I was surrounded by incredible support. My wonderful friends Sue, Helen, and Karen stepped in to look after my cat and me. Their kindness and care were a beacon of hope during some of my darkest days. My family, especially my mum and siblings, were my rock, providing unwavering support and love.
As I regained my strength, I had a lot of time to reflect on my life and what I truly wanted to do. This period of introspection led me to a profound decision: to follow my dream of becoming a counsellor. The experience of being so vulnerable and dependent on others made me realize the importance of mental health and the power of empathy and support.
Today, as I embark on this new path, I carry with me the lessons learned from my illness and recovery. I am grateful for the second chance at life and the opportunity to help others navigate their own challenges. My journey through bacterial meningitis was tough, but it also paved the way for a fulfilling and meaningful future.
